Pulse Motors for Beginners:
Your Complete Starting Point

Welcome. If you're new to pulse motors and not sure where to start, you're in the right place. I've built this guide specifically as a launchpad โ€” everything you need to understand the hobby, pick your first build, and find the detailed guides for each topic. Bookmark this page. It's your map.

Step 1: Understand What a Pulse Motor Is

Before you build anything, spend 10 minutes reading What Is a Pulse Motor? โ€” my complete explanation of what these motors are, how they work, their history, and why they're fascinating. You'll understand the basics of electromagnetic induction, back EMF, and pulsed switching before touching a single component.

Step 2: Choose Your First Build

Two great options for beginners:

Option A: Hall Sensor Pulse Motor
A simple circuit with an external Hall effect sensor as the trigger. Flexible, easy to understand, and great for learning. Follow my Complete Beginner's Guide.


Option B: Bedini SSG
The legendary self-triggering Bedini Simple School Girl circuit. Massive community support, tons of documentation, and it introduces you to bifilar coil winding. Start with the Bedini SSG Circuit Guide.

My recommendation: if you have zero electronics experience, start with Option A (Hall sensor). If you have basic circuit experience and want to dive into the deep end of the community, go with the Bedini SSG.

Step 3: Get Your Tools

You don't need much to get started with pulse motors:

Step 5: Wind Your Coil

Read the Coil Winding Guide before you start. Understanding bifilar vs single winding, core materials, and resistance targets will save you a lot of time and frustration. Check the Wire Gauge Guide to pick the right AWG for your coil.

Step 6: Choose Your Transistor

The Transistor Guide has everything you need to pick the right switch for your circuit. For a first build: TIP31C (simple Hall sensor design) or 2N3055 (classic Bedini SSG).

Step 7: Understand Back EMF

Once your motor is running, learn about Back EMF recovery. This is where the real magic happens โ€” and where your understanding of the motor deepens significantly.
